Former football coach Barry Hughes on Sunday, after a short illness at age 81 died. The prominent Dutch boss was in a series of Dutch clubs active.
Hughes played in England for West Bromwich Albion and in the Netherlands at Blue-and-White and Alkmaar’54. He was known as a trainer, and is regarded as the discoverer of the former Oranjeaanvoerder Ruud Gullit, that he at the age of sixteen to HFC Haarlem took.
Gullit responded Sunday night on Instagram on the death of his former trainer. “Thank you Barry, that you give me the chance given to a professional footballer to be. You believed in me and was a mentor. I will never forget you, you will remain forever in my heart.”
