“The first few rides, I felt strong”, he indicated, “but then I got something to say. Maybe I need some calm, tranquility. I think it’s great for every day fans to salute in this year’s Giro, with my jersey of champion and to the team presentation. But as soon as I get on the bike step, there is something wrong. It is not my Giro this year.”
The Italian won the third stage, but was later downgraded due to irregular sprinting. “That certainly plays a role,” he admitted. “I felt strong and confident to downgrading, but all that stuff around it was not good for my head.”
And now? The Tour
Viviani is getting out of the Giro because there is hardly sprintkansen and is preparing now for the Tour. “I’m disappointed, because if you have a goal set and you can’t reach, then it is better to go home, and to keep you focus on your new goal.”
Last year won Viviani four stages and the points jersey in the Giro. The last edition, he was three times second and one time fourth.
