The belgian Stoffel Vandoorne managed during his very first WEC race immediately to the stage to finish the race. For Vandoorne was also great to have for his hometown audience on the stage.
Just like his very first F1 race, in which he in 2016 with hardly any preparation for Fernando Alonso to win a race had to raids, also found his WEC debut under very difficult circumstances. The 6h of Spa was characterised indeed by the very difficult weather conditions in which the car had to be.
Vandoorne received from SMP Racing, the unique opportunity during his first WEC race the start. On the fifth place managed Vandoorne, together with teammates Mikhail Aleshin and Vitaly Petrov in third on the stage to finish the race.
“It was my first race for SMP racing and he took place under very difficult weather conditions, there was even snow. I am very happy that I’m on the stage standing,” says Vandoorne back to his WEC debut.
“This was a great start for me with the SMP Racing team and I am glad that I good results have been obtained. We have performed well, especially given the very difficult weather conditions for everyone.”
The podium of Vandoorne, Petrov and Aleshin was still a bit threatened by a problem with the gearbox. Fortunately, for Vandoorne and the Belgian fans finished the trio still on the stage.
“The start of the race was good, Vitaly and Mikhail were there then in the car to the finish, even though we lost the fifth gear. I want to thank everyone for the tremendous support that we got, it was fun to be on stage, to finish the race.”
A nice debut in the WEC so for Vandoorne, who within a few weeks with SMP Racing will also participate in the legendary 24 hours of Le Mans. The 6h of Spa and the difficult circumstances were already a good preparation for Le Mans.
