The Luxembourgers take Saturday, farewell of old-the grand-duke John, who, on april 23, died at the age of 98. The staatsbegrafenis takes place in the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Luxembourg City. The Belgian royal family is well represented at the funeral.
Grand duke Jan was married to Joséphine-Charlotte, the sister of king Baudouin and king Albert II. The couple had five children. Joséphine-Charlotte died in 2005.
King Filip and queen Mathilde, crown princess Elisabeth, king Albert and queen Paola, princess Astrid and prince Lorenz, prince Laurent and princess Léa attended the funeral.
Jan was born on 5 January 1921, the eldest son of grand duchess Charlotte and prince Félix of Bourbon-Parma. On november 12, 1964, he took officially his mother as the grand duke of Luxembourg. Jan did on October 7, 2000 abdication in favour of his eldest son Henry.
Currently, there is a mourning period of twelve days in Luxembourg. The only Grand duchy in the world counts about 600,000 inhabitants.
