Felix Grossschartner Saturday’s fifth and penultimate stage in the Tour of Turkey (WorldTour) won. The Austrian Bora-hansgrohe came in the queen’s stage first on the snow-shortened final climb to Kartepe. Remco Evenepoel showed himself to be in the final but had to be content with the (handsome) third place.

The penultimate stage in this Tour of Turkey was on paper, 164,1 km long Bursa, at Kartepe. But the queen’s stage was by snow shortened. The finish at the ski station, at 1,300 m altitude, the snow does not reach. Of the 17 kilometre-long final climb, with gradients up to 10% – remained so for a further 12 km on. The steepest passages were, however, in the course: in the first twelve kilometres of the climb there was an average growth rate of 9,15%.

Three riders went on very wet roads in the attack. With Robbe Ghys (Vlaanderen-Baloise), there was also a Belgian and that drove even for a while virtually in the leaders jersey. Together with Dani Viejo (Euskadi Murias) and Roger Kluge (Lotto-Soudal), he received a five minute head start but in the run-up to the winning race decreased that head start as snow for the sun.

With a thinned out peloton of about 40 riders was the steep climb up to the real snow used. Astana and Dimension Data define the tempo, allowing one rider after the other overboard.

Attack Evenepoel

Remco Evenepoel koerste attentive in the front and five kilometers from the line he drew as himself in the attack. The 19-year-old talent from Deceuninck-Quick Step immediately resulted in fragmentation in the leading group and with a second gear, he took a few steps away. After three kilometers from the top he was again overtaken by Felix Grossschartner, Merhawi Kudus and Valerio Conti.

When Grossschartner moments later passed, had Evenepoel fit. Kudus took fast and the two seemed to go sprinting for the dagzege. Grossschartner jump, 200 meters from the finish line is the new leader. Evenepoel was just before the stripe is still voorbijgesneld by Conti and so fourth.
