Mertens qualified for the finals in Qatar by reigning Wimbledonkampioene Angelique Kerber (WTA 6) to turn off. Earlier wipte them all Kiki Bertens (WTA 8). “It is super, especially because I am touched by two players from the top ten to beat,” notes Mertens. “In the Fed Cup I can work out with Johan Van Herck and maybe I am picking now the fruits of that. I started very strong, was very aggressive. But it is difficult her (Kerber) all the time under pressure because at any point should you 100 percent. In the second set, I lost some intensity and therefore, she could her rhythm. Luckily I was able to me again and with the storage and by to for to come and make a difference. I am very happy.”
Against Halep, who recently trained by Thierry Van Cleemput, lost Mertens to her three previous confrontations. “But that was on clay,” says the Limburger. “I can only say that I feel good, mentally and physically. I still have a lot of energy. I had not expected here in the finals but tennis is full of surprises. It will be a difficult match because she brings a lot of balls back. But I have faith. I’ve just had a great match won can relax and play. I’m certainly very curious what it will give.”
Simona Halep starts as a favourite against Mertens but is on her guard. “In a final there is always pressure and emotions are bigger, but I feel ready,” said the Romanian after her hard-fought victory against the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina. “I’m going to try to quickly recover and then everything is back to give. I play liberated: I have a Grand Slam won, was first in the world rankings, have my goals reached. I try more to entertain and I feel that I have more fun on the court stand.”
