Elise Mertens defeats former number one of the world and takes in Doha’s largest victory of her career

Elise Mertens has the Qatar Total Open on her name written. Our compatriot was in the final in Doha, too strong for the Romanian Simona Halep (WTA-3), the former number one of the world. Mertens took it after a thriller of three sets: it was a 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3.

In the first set, the engine started still not all the way at the Mertens. The 23-year-old made some mistakes in her own storage, where opponent Halep benefited. The first set went 6-3 lost. In the second set bounced Mertens on – all she had to do just five minutes from the site road to be treated to her lower back. The second set took them afterwards within despite heavy pressure from Halep.

In the third set, things went smoother for Mertens, 6-3 for her fifth WTA title binnenhaalde. For the number 21 of the world, however, it is also the largest victory of her career. In addition to the four known Grandslamtoernooien the tournament in Doha, which is part of the so-called ‘Premier Five’, one of the most important tennis tournaments of the year. Mertens won in her career, never a tournament of this size.
