Elise Mertens (WTA 21) has placed itself for the final of the WTA tournament in Doha by the German Angelique Kerber (WTA 6) to beat. In the final wait topreekshoofd Simona Halep (WTA 3).
In the semi-finals, the Belgian number one in three sets of the German third seed Angelique Kerber (WTA 6): 6-4, 2-6 and 6-1 after 1 hour and 48 minutes. Mertens and triple grandslamwinnares Kerber stood for the first time opposite each other on the WTA circuit.
Mertens is in the final against topreekshoofd Simona Halep (WTA 3). The Romanian defeated the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (WTA 7) 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4. Halep, that in 2014 the tournament in Doha won by in the final, Kerber to beat, recently coached by Thierry Van Cleemput, the ex-coach of David Goffin.
The 23-year-old Mertens is in her sixth WTA final, seeking a fifth WTA title. The 27-year-old Halep, just like Kerber, a former number one in the world, stands for the 34th time in the final of a WTA tournament. She has 18 WTA titles to her name. Mertens and Halep took the two times earlier against each other. Last year was Halep, both at Roland Garros (6-2, 6-1) as well as in Madrid (6-0, 6-3) are clearly too strong in two sets.
