Elise Mertens (WTA 21) is very happy with her place in the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Doha (916.131 dollar). The 23-year-old Limburg managed to say in her match against the 27-year-old Dutch Kiki Bertens (WTA 8), “free to play”. Which she won in two sets, 6-4 and 6-3.
“My first set was of a very high level,” says Mertens. “I knew I had to try to get as close as possible to the dead ball line to remain and with the smallest chance for the field to go, because she is very strong. My storage was also good and I managed to get quite a liberated to play. That is encouraging for what follows.”
Mertens succeeded Thursday in getting there again after a disappointing weekend in the Fed Cup against France, in which she and her two enkelspelen lost. “The Fed Cup was not a success, but well, that’s part of tennis. I’ve given everything and I can nothing blame you, but I was hoping of course for a different outcome.” The tournament in Doha, she saw as ‘a new chance’.
In the semi-finals take Mertens Friday against the 31-year-old German third seed Angelique Kerber (WTA 6), last year’s Wimbledon won. “It will be no easy match, as Kerber has a lot of experience,” says Mertens. “It is a player with a good counter. So I have to be aggressive, but without me to rush into things.” (belga)
