Elise Mertens (WTA 21) has Wednesday placed before the quarter-finals of the WTA-tournament in the Qatari capital Doha (hard/916.131 dollar).
The Limburg won in the second round after 1 hour and 48 minutes with 6-2 and 7-6 (7/3) of the Czech Kristyna Pliskova (WTA 90). That was as ‘lucky loser’ fished for the main table after the forfeit of her twin sister Karolina. The number five of the world, the winner of the tournament in 2017, withdrew due to a viral disease. It was the first mutual duel between the 23-year-old Mertens, and the 26-year-old Pliskova.
In the quarter-finals is Mertens opposite the 27-year-old Dutch Kiki Bertens (WTA 8), the fifth seed. That eliminated the Spanish Carla Suarez Navarro (WTA 26) with 2-6, 6-1 and 6-1.
Mertens lost at the beginning of this year of Bertens in Brisbane but won the two duels earlier, in 2017 in New Haven and Hobart. She is the only Belgian on the table of the Qatar Total Open. Last year, she was there in the second round off.
