Elise Mertens (WTA 21) has on Tuesday placed for the second round at the WTA tournament in Doha (hard/916.131 dollar). Mertens knocked in her first match after one hour and 22 minutes, the Czech Katerina Siniakova (WTA 44) in two sets (6-4 and 6-2). In the second round affects Mertens another Czech, Karolina Pliskova (WTA 5), the second seed in the Qatari capital.
The victory will be a boost for the Belgian number one on the WTA rankings after her disappointing Fed Cup weekend. Mertens succeeded last weekend in Liège, during the Fed Cup encounter against France, not in a duel to win. The 23-year-old Limburg lost successively of Alizé Cornet (WTA 51) and Caroline Garcia (WTA 19). Belgium eventually lost with 1-3 of France.
Last year killed Mertens in Doha in the second round. She is this year’s only Belgian on the main table.
