Coach Eusebio Di Francesco and technical director Monchi are Wednesday night deep through the dust gone after the painful elimination of AS Roma in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia. The Romans went up 7-1 under against Fiorentina.
“The only thing I can do now is apologize for this painful defeat,” said Di Francesco after the debacle in Florence on the site of AS Roma. “I find it difficult to find an explanation. We played in each case, far below our level.”
At rest was Roma’s ‘only’ 3-1 behind at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, but the team of Di Francesco knew in the second half to set up. Maro Benassi threw the match in the 66th minute slot, after which the Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen in the last quarter also was passed over by Federico Chiesa and Giovanni Simeone (two hits).
