Maarten van der Weijden wants after his elfstedenzwemtocht not as a hero to be treated. “I did this not to put on a pedestal, but to help.”
“I have three days to swim and knew that the swelling would be. But I also knew that I cancer patients this could help”, the olympic champion in conversation with NU.nl know.
“I am very grateful for the life that I lead. Grateful that I recovered from leukemia, the olympic gold won and two beautiful daughters. If the people who are grateful for what they have from that gratitude can do something for the people who are less fortunate, you do it because you have each other, anything goes.”
