Elise Mertens wins in Sydney, with varying degrees of success for Belgian girls in Hobart

Elise Mertens has Wednesday qualified for the eighth finals of the WTA tennis tournament in Sydney. Kirsten Flipkens qualified in Hobart for the quarter-finals but Alison Van Uytvanck got no further than the eighth-finals.

Elise Mertens (WTA 12/N. 10) was Tuesday night with a 7-6 (7/4), 2-6 and 4-1 to the Czech Katerina Siniakova (WTA 36), when the game pause was due to rain. The Belgian number one was the match Wednesday with 6-2. In the next game she takes it on against Anett Kontaveit (WTA 20) from Estonia or Monica Puig (WTA 53) from Puerto Rico.

The 32-year-old Kirsten Flipkens (WTA 49/N. 7) beat on the WTA tennis tournament in Hobart, the 20-year-old Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova, 46th in the world rankings, with a score of 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-1 after more than two hours of play. In the next round takes Flipkens against the American Sofia Kenin (WTA 56) or the Tunisian Ons Jabeur (WTA 58).

Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 51/N. 8) is in Hobart not getting further ahead than the eighth-finals. They lost against the Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (WTA 77). The Belgian number three was after almost one and a half hours of play defeated in two sets (3-6, 2-6). Her partner Greet Minnen (WTA 346) is yet to put in Hobart.
