Fabio Jakobsen (22) had a strong debut year with Quick-Step Floors. He won seven races, including the Scheldeprijs and a stage in the Eneco Tour. “In 2019, I still want to become stronger”, says the fast Dutchman.
Fernando Gaviria left the Belgian formation. “But I will not only have that hole to fill”, said the Dutchman, on winter training with Deceuninck-Quick Step in the Spanish Calpe. “Alvara Hodeg and I will be along to take his place, with the difference that we, the Tour will not drive, but Elia (Viviani), where they likely will go. Fernando scored in the very great prices, I still don’t know what I can achieve.”
Jakobsen won the Scheldeprijs in his debut year, and brought under more also Nokere Curonian, two stages in the Tour of Guangxi and a ride in the Eneco Tour to his name. “I did have a great season and achieved more than I could ever dream of. It certainly will not be easy to match. Last season I was often still at work in smaller races, in 2019, I want the bar a little higher, participate in bigger races and see where I end up. Yes, it would be quite possible that I less win than in 2018, but I’m still only 22 years old, I have to especially have a lot to learn. I especially want to personally, also to progress. The chance exists that if I were heavier races continue, I will not win but I will take a better rider am and then I have to go up. Maybe I end up to four or five times as second, but we speak yet of a top season at the end of the year because I better, faster, stronger’ve become.”
His first great goal is to Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. “Much of course depends on the price. But if we are with a small group to the finish line and I am still, then I would hope that it is a sprint and I my chance.”
Hope to be on Tour, Vuelta or Giro
This year’s been a great Round on the program? “I don’t know yet. That is a question that you Tom Steels. He is the leader who has me to accompany and knows if I am ready for it. If I my heart should to follow, then I want all the Tour, Vuelta or Giro, and secretly think I’m ready for it to be. But if you are 22 years old, you still would not know everything and it is better to others to be there to decide.”
Jakobsen started his season in the Tour of Algarve (20-24februari), then include Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and the GP Le Samyn on the program. He will also start in Paris-Nice. “When I get there, a ride would be able to win, that would be super,” he ended. “But that is, of course, a great race, with a lot of germany at the start.”
