It Was a cynical joke? A veiled threat? A raised middle finger to the rest of the world?

State broadcaster Russia Today (RT) has sent this week a bizarre nieuwjaarscadeau to his relationships: a replica of the cathedral of Salisbury, made of chocolate.

The gift is a direct reference to the attack with the zenuwgif novitsjok on ex-spy Sergei Skripal, in march of this year. When the British police last september camera images of two suspects neighbour, was the RT editor in chief Margarita Simonjan, the only two Russians allowed to interview.

During a surreal interview claimed ‘Ruslan Bosjirov’ and ‘Alexander Petrov’, that they are not secret agents, but were simple tourists. Bosjirov called as a landmark, the cathedral of Salisbury: ‘famous for its spire of 123 metres.’ The men were now so warm, that Simonjan kindly offered the air conditioning to turn on.

The ‘interview’ led to great hilarity in Russia: on social media were jokes about ‘the spire of Salisbury’ not of the air. Shortly after the interview, the identified research group is Bellingcat ‘Petrov’ and ‘Bosjirov’ as Aleksandr Misjkin and Anatoli Tsjepiga, officers at the Russian military intelligence Groups.

“To set about your neck to go

The comments on RT’s chocoladekathedraal walked widely. “To set about your neck to go”, tweeted Paula Chertok, author at the Ukrainian news site dedicated to Euromaidan Press. But the Russian independent news channel Dozjd invited the editors of RT, on the tea: ‘We are afraid for him to eat.’

The reporting of RT – worldwide-broadcast – is under fire in the United Kingdom. The British mediawaakhond Ofcom ruled earlier this month that the Russian state broadcaster after the attack in Salisbury several times in the rules for objective reporting has been violated. Immediately afterwards, announced Ofcom Russian counterpart Roskomnadzor to BBC World News to go and investigate possible violations.

The cathedral was not in fact the only joke of RT. On december 24, put the transmitter in a video on YouTube, in which Donald Trump a christmas gift unwraps – a black t-shirt with the RT logo and the Russian text: ‘you Work for the Group?’ Melania Trump pulls the T-shirt in bed. At the request of her husband, she translates the text: “make America great again.’
