Canvas bought My brilliant friend in november. Which television series is the film adaptation of the eponymous bestseller by Elena Ferrante, translated into Dutch as The genial friend. It is the first of the four Neapolitan novels of Ferrante.
Canvas sends My Brilliant Friend out in the christmas holidays, from Tuesday 25 december, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 22.00. Those who can’t wait for the next episodes they are from the 25th of december even though all view on VRT NOW.
My brilliant friend tells the story of two Neapolitan girls growing up in a working-class neighbourhood in the 50s. One of them is extremely intelligent, but must be of school to go to work. She tries out her environment to escape an early marriage. Her friend should have further study. Their friendship will determine the rest of their lives.
The shooting took place near Naples. It is remarkable that the whole series in the Neapolitan: that dialect is even for many Italians, so incomprehensible that they need subtitles.
The series is according to Canvas one of the most ambitious projects in the European television history. Productiedesigner Giancarlo Basili built the world of Ferrante in Naples all the way from the nothing on: 20.000 m2 of decors, 14 gebouwenblokken, 5 interieursets, a church and a tunnel. A reminder of the glory days of Cinecitta, although there was also a lot of filmed on location.
HBO broadcast the series from 19 november, the Rai a few weeks later. 29 million Italians saw the series in the meantime. The series was, since the avant-premiere at the Venice film Festival, has been received very positively. The series was compared with that of other legendary winning streak, La meglio gioventu.
