The Flemish medium animated film Ce magnifique gâteau ! by Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels has Saturday night the Prize for Best Director was won on the European Animation Awards. Two co-productions with Flanders, Another Day of Life and Funan were a total of three prizes awarded.
The European Animation Awards, also known as the Emile Awards, were in 2017 for the first time awarded. Like last year, the ceremony took place in the Northern French Lille.
With awards in 18 categories constitute the Emile Awards is a crowning achievement for the European animation field. Flemish productions and co-productions this year were good for 13 of the total of 90 nominations, an exceptionally high number. Eventually, there were four nominations will be redeemed with prizes in the following categories: Best Director for a Short Animated film (Ce magnifique gâteau), Best Screenplay for a feature Film (Funan), Best Sound Design for a feature Film (Funan) and Best Soundtrack (Another Day of Life).
Ce magnifique gâteau ! is a medium, stop-motion animated film of the Ghent animatieduo Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels. The film tells the story of five characters in the colonial Africa at the end of the 19th century. For the recordings brought the creators a whopping eight months in the animation of Beast Animation. For the voice cast they did under other profession on Jan Decleir, Wim Willaert, Goua Grovogui and Gaston Motambe.
Ce magnifique gâteau ! went in may, the world premiere in Cannes, as part of the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs. In June, the film was awarded the Prix André-Martin on the International Animatiefilmfestival of Annecy and thereafter followed dozens of international selections and a handful of film awards, including the Grand prix for Best Film at the Animafest in Zagreb and the Audience award at the short film Festival in the Portuguese Vila do Conde. Earlier this week it became known that Ce magnifique gâteau ! also nominated for the Annie Awards, the most important animation awards in the United States.
Ce magnifique gâteau ! was produced by Beast Animation and co-produced with Vivement Lundi!, Pedri Animation and ARTE France.
Another Day of Life is a hybrid documentary by Raúl de la Fuente and Damian Nenow, in which archival images are mixed with animation and live-action elements. The film tells the story of a trip that journalist Ryszard Kapuściński in 1975 made in Angola. The Polish star reporter spent three months daily report of the grim war that followed Angola’s carnation revolution.
