THE HAGUE – The ’Ndrangheta is an Italian maffiaclan which, amongst others, deals with drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering and illegal online gambling. The maffiaorganisatie originally comes from Calabria, in the south of Italy. The ’Ndrangheta is considered the most powerful of the Italian maffiaorganisaties, which is also very active in the rest of the world.
Last year was the boss of the ’Ndrangheta, Santo Vottari, held after being discovered in a bunkerschuilplaats in Calabria.
The name ’Ndrangheta, a word in the dialect of the region of Campania, would be derived from andragathos, Greek for a brave man. The ’Ndrangheta was in the 19th century, great and mighty, as poor farm workers in Campania, against the exploitation by large landowners, often nobility from elsewhere, organised. Even after the abolition of these relationships continued to be the mafia has a strong appeal to keep, due to the high unemployment in the Mezzogiorno, the poor southern part of Italy.
Last year was the boss of the ’Ndrangheta, Santo Vottari, held after being discovered in a bunkerschuilplaats in Calabria. He would be one of the perpetrators of the infamous maffiamoorden in the German Duisburg. There were as a result of a feud between the two maffiaclans for a pizzeria six Italians shot dead. Vottari would have also been involved in other murders.
In the Netherlands In recent years, several members of the ’Ndrangheta were arrested. So was last year september, still a fugitive Italian picked up at the Waterlooplein in Amsterdam. The Italian authorities were seeking the man in connection with drug trafficking. In september 2013, in Nieuwegein, the then 39-year-old Francesco N. held, that in Italy was wanted for murder, possession of firearms and membership of the ’Ndrangheta. He was probably already for a longer time hiding in the Netherlands.
