ALEXANDRIA – Dámaso López Núñez, the former right hand of the Mexican drugscrimineel Joaquin ’El Chapo’ Guzmán, is in America for involvement in drug trafficking sentenced to life imprisonment. He was seen as the successor of the fugitive Guzmán as the leader of the Sinaloa-drug cartel.

Except the drug lord was López, nicknamed El Licenciado (’the bsc’), also a lawyer and director of the Altiplano prison, where ’El Chapo’ (’little one’) and two-time escaped. He would have played a major role in his first escape in 2001. López was in 2017 arrested and extradited to the United States.


López offered Friday to apologize to the American people. He is expected to be an important witness in the trial against Guzmán, that the beginning of this month has started.

’El Chapo’ was on the run until 2014, when he was re-arrested. A year later, he escaped via a tunnel from the prison and remained on the run until his arrest in 2016.
