Johan Timmermans explains in the aftermath of Operation Clean Hands, his mandate as chairman of the board of directors of KV Mechelen voluntarily down. That he made himself known on the website of the club.
“I suppose that the mere fact that I president am and had a good conversation with the police, for unrest and a lack of serenity creates,” says Timmermans, who was chairman since its rescue in 2003. “I will step aside, because for me the priority is always the interest of KV Mechelen, its players and its fans.”
Timmermans was mid-October, invited for questioning by the federal police in Hasselt, in the framework of the investigation of fraud and matchfixing in the Belgian football. However, it was not in suspicion. Olivier Somers and Thierry Steemans, respectively the majority shareholder and financial manager of KV Mechelen, were held in suspicion of membership of a criminal organisation, money laundering and bribery. Also sports director Stefaan Vanroy was in suspicion, but released under conditions.
“For me the priority is always the interest of KV Mechelen, its players and its fans,” says Timmermans. “I suppose that the mere fact that I president am and had a good conversation with the police, for restlessness and lack of serenity. I have this mandate, always with a lot of pride and commitment exercised and am convinced that my successor with the same energy and dedication of the board of directors shall preside. The future of PR must be our absolute priority. I will also be the club that I have been more than 50 years, a very warm heart toedraag, continue to support”, says Timmermans.
