Polis took on the Republican Walker Stapleton. He speaks but little about his private life, but the media see him as a part of the ‘rainbow wave’ of LGBTQ candidates at different levels in the midterms.
The Democrat Andrew Gillum is not the first black governor of Florida. He accepts the victory of republican Ron DeSatnis, by president Trump was supported. Trump called Gillum “a thief, “”a socialist” and someone who is ” the mayor of the badly-controlled Tallahassee, reputedly one of the most corrupt cities in the country. The FBI performs, indeed, an investigation into corruption in the city government, but Gillum itself is not mentioned.
The campaign in Florida turned partly around the skin color of Gillum. Supporters of DeSantis did racist phone calls to voters. The Republican was forced to distance itself from these statements.
DeSantis did during the campaign itself a “pitbull-defender of Trump”. The Republicans have been providing for two decades the governor in Florida.
Governors control the local Congresses of the states and the population therefore is often more important than Washington. They are four years and a maximum of two terms. Until yesterday had 33 states, a Republican governor, 16 have a Democrat. About 36 gouverneurschappen was passed, which the Republicans most need to defend: 26.
