“Why watch women on earth to The handmaid’s tale?’ ask a friend. ‘It is pure gruwelporno, with all those women who are like rats trapped?’ It’s true: women in the theocratic republic of Gilead are the property of their husband or father, unless they can have children, a rarity in the heavily polluted country. Than they are Commanders given that them each month ritual may rape.

Those cruel new world Margaret Atwood in 1985, outlined, seemed to be last year eerily recognizable. Trump, who thinks that he has women in the cross should intervene, it was just ingezworen as president. His first bewindsdaad was a law allowing for the American women more difficult to be on birth control to hit or have an abortion. In this season there is a scene where Junes husband a power of attorney must sign that the pill should take. But last year, there was also one of solidarity and optimism among women. That hope was also in The handmaid’s tale: the women are trapped, but their minds are still free. A sarcastic gedachtebubbel of June is also the first thing you of her should be in the new series, after minutes of nail-biting tension.
The hope of #MeToo is to wear (it was also a lawsuit against Bill Cosby come if there is not also a man – comedian Hannibal Buress – him a rapist had mentioned?)
Even more reason not to watch, but we want to know what happens with June, who, at the end of the first series in a blinded van get. The new range continues with that scene: maybe kidnaps the resistance June so she can escape, maybe she goes to the scaffold because she has refused another maid to stone.
The series is more extensive than the slim novella by Atwood. The two episodes that we of the new series saw, again in virtue of the flashbacks that make plausible how the revolution is carried out while decent citizens looked. But the scenes in the infamous Colonies, prison camps where women are the soils with the bare hand, are (still?) not as strong as the story of June.
We want that the June escapes: run, June, run! Though the formula lurking: there are so many movies about men who escape the nazis, or the Khmer rouge, from Alcatraz or devil’s island. The handmaid’s tale remains gripping, exciting fiction that you think, but is just slightly less surprising than last year.
