GENEVA – The damage caused by natural disasters in the past ten years has doubled compared to the previous years. That is the figure for the International Red Cross in a report. What natural disasters was 2017 one of the most costly years ever. Major disasters, such as hurricanes in the United States and the Caribbean, caused, according to the Red Cross, more than 330 billion u.s. dollars (over 290 billion euros) in damages.

Most of the disasters were the last decade in Asia, where the majority of people were affected. Between 2008 and 2017, there are a total of 3715 natural disasters have been. Of these, there were, according to the Red Cross, and five out of six related to the weather. China, the USA, the Philippines, India and Indonesia are most often affected by natural disasters.
A major concern for the Red Cross is that the assistance after natural disasters, not everyone is reached. According to an estimate by the UN this year, 134 million people depending on humanitarian assistance, but still no 96 million people get that actually.
