In the south of France, in the department of Haute-Loire just below Clermont-Ferrand, Monday night for sure 800 cars blocked by an early and unexpected hard winter weather. According to local media there was ten inches of snow and the roads there almost roadless without snow chains.
On the Route Nationale 88, between Saint-Etienne and Puy-en-Velay, hundreds of cars stuck. Motorists left their vehicle behind, so the snowploughs could not pass. Almost 200 people are taking shelter in gymnasiums in the area. More than 1.350 families are without power.
In addition to the snowfall there is also a strong wind. In 26 French departments, from the Ardennes to the Tarn, code orange. For Tuesday is softer weather predicted.
