World champion Alejandro Valverde is the winner of the Vélo d’or 2018, the price for the best rider of the year. The magazine Vélo Magazine, awards the trophy since 1992. Valverde, 38, after Miguel Indurain (1992 & ‘93) and Alberto Contador (2007, ‘08, ‘09 & ‘14) the third Spaniard on the roll of honour. He follows Chris Froome.

Valverde has recorded this season with fourteen victories, including, in addition to the world CHAMPIONSHIPS in Innsbruck, two stages in the Vuelta and the rounds of Valencia, Abu Dhabi and Catalonia. He was also second in the Flèche wallonne, fifth in the Amstel Gold Race and the Vuelta a españa, fourteenth in the Tour and ended the world tour as a third (after Simon Yates and Peter Sagan).

“This makes me proud and very happy”, responded ‘El Imbatido’. “This is a very significant price and he gives me a lot of joy after my world cup win. It is a trophy or a place in addition to my rainbow jersey. It is something special my name to see a hall of fame with Indurain and Contador, two of the great riders from the Spanish cycling history.”

Three Belgians have won the Vélo d’or: Johan Museeuw (1996), Tom Boonen (2005) and Philippe Gilbert (2011).
