Jubilaris Schöne: ’They called me the twelfth man’

“I am not the statistics,” says the 32-year-old midfielder. “But of course it is very nice that I already have so many games for this beautiful club I may play. And I hope that there are still some rest though.”

Who would have thought six years ago thought that Schöne such a milestone for Ajax would reach? “I came to press conference of NEC and they called me here the twelfth man”, knows he still. The Dane arrived, however, with other ambitions in Amsterdam. And how the seasons eventually ended, Schöne found himself very often in the basisformatie. “At all positions of the midfield, but also as a right back and even as a striker,” he laughs.

Also, under the rotational trainer Erik ten Hag don Schöne preliminary not for his position to fear. The attacking midfielder of yesteryear plays match after match, just for his defense. He distributes the game and is remarkably often in the position where his opponents the ball lose. “In this role, will my career ever end”, he thinks. “This is my best role.”

Schöne cherishes beautiful memories of his 250 appearances for Ajax. Two league titles, a Johan Cruijff Scale and victories over Barcelona and Manchester City in the Champions League. And of course, beautiful goals, especially from free kicks or long shots. Who does not remember his matches against Feyenoord, Paris Saint Germain and Celtic? It would be good that he is at Ajax with a stronger selection has played this season. “Apart from that game against PSV, we are playing good football. Also after European matches, such as Tuesday against Bayern Munich. We played AZ yet reasonable way”, that he meant the victory of 5-0 on Sunday.

About his future at Ajax makes Schöne’t. “My contract expires but we have not yet spoken. We are now of one after the other competition. The season is still long. And I also have it not only for the say. It is also about what Ajax wants.”
