American Hustle, now in the Movies & Series Pass!

A clever, exciting and funny crime drama set in the frenzied years of the 70’s. With Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.

Some of this actually happened, as is read in the begingeneriek of the film. American Hustle is indeed loosely based on a controversial undercover operation of the FBI. Loosely, because director David O. Russell (The Silver Linings Playbook) returns to his own flamboyant twist to it.

Inspiration: the American Abscam scandal, which at the end of the 70s resulted in the condemnation of corrupt politicians. Result: a misdaadkomedie about deception in all its forms, in which everyone is everyone happy can be deceiving. The setting: the New York of the frenzied years of the 70’s.

We follow Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), a beroepsoplichter who is married to the rather unstable Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) and her young son has. Together with his mistress, ex-stripper Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), he runs a small business in nepleningen and counterfeit art. The two keep it a dressy and expensive life, until FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) at the scene appears. He arrests the duo, but forces them to their practices to continue in operation to four local politicians in the fall to lure them with bribes.

A flamboyant and funny film by director and screenwriter David O. Russell, who previously, Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter delivered. This film got a whopping ten (!) Oscarnominaties, inter alia, in the categories of Best film, Best direction and Best costumes. The amazing cast of the movie was good for a further four nominations. Of the ten nominations, there was no silver, but American Hustle did three Golden Globes in the prizes.
