Flanders sends first unmanned boat’ ocean

ANTWERP – Flanders is an unmanned boat in the Atlantic Ocean cross. In may 2019 leaves the vessel, the Mahi, from the west coast of France for a trip to Guadeloupe.

On the way Mahi scientific data collection and via a satellite transmission. The trip takes eighty to one hundred days. Mahi is powered by solar energy and is four metres long. According to Flanders is Mahi the first boat that autonomously crossing venture.

The project is a collaboration of the Flemish government, universities, the Antwerp port and the common port of rotterdam North Sea Port (Zeeland ports and the port of Ghent).

“Unmanned vehicles are the future, and no longer science fiction”, says ceo Jacques Vandermeiren of the port of Antwerp.
