The film is the second project of actor Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle.
Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle is re-assured of a true blockbuster with his latest film, First Man. The biopic about astronaut Neil Armstrong has Ryan Gosling in the role of the first man to set foot on the moon.
The film premiered at the openingsnacht of the Venice International Film Festival, and received a standing ovation. Ryan Gosling receives particular praise from film critics for his performance as Armstrong. Gosling and Chazelle worked together before on the film, La La Land, the six Oscars won.
Gosling told in a press conference that he during the rehearsals, got help from Armstrong’s family, to the astronaut, as well as possible to learn to play.
The film has a chance on winning the grand prize at the Italian festival, the Golden Lion. To win First Man to compete against the new western from the Coen brothers, the remake of the horror film Suspiria in 1977, and The Favourite starring Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. The chairman of the jury is director Guillermo del Toro, that the winners will make known on 8 september.
