‘Girl’, the feature film debut of Lukas Dhondt, is the Belgian entry for the Oscars. That divides the Flemish Audiovisual Fund Friday.
‘Girl’ was this year in world premiere in Cannes and clinched the Camera d’or for best first film way. The feature film debut of Lukas Dhont fell in the meantime also in the prizes at the festivals of Palic and Odessa.
The film is based on true facts and tells the story of a teenager who was born as a boy and ballerina wants to be.
‘Since I was a child, am, I dream of the Oscars. Belgium to represent, is an incredible honor, ” responded Dhont on the submission of his film in the category of Non-English-language Film. “What me over the past months has happened exceeded my wildest dreams, and the oscar nomination is the icing on the cake.’
Five films on the shortlist
It is the third year in a row that a Flemish production is submitted for the Oscars, after ‘Le Fidèle’ from Michaël R. Roskam, in 2017 and ‘D’Ardennes’ by Robin Pront in 2016. Earlier Flemish submissions for Best Non-English Film ‘The misfortunates’ (2009) and “Ben X” (2007). Next to “Bullhead” in 2011 dragged the Flemish productions ‘The Broken Circle Breakdown’ (2013), ” Everybody’s famous!’ (2000) and ‘Daens’ (1992) an Oscar nomination in the wait.
The submitted films are the coming months, viewed by the members of the Foreign Language Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). On the basis of their reviews in the autumn a shortlist of nine films put together. Thereof a maximum of five feature films nominated for an Oscar in the category of Non-English-language Film. The official nominations will be announced on 22 January 2019, the ceremonial award ceremony takes place on February 24, 2019.
On October 9, opens ‘Girl’ is the Film Fest Gent and from 17 October runs the movie with us in the halls.
