In her essay, writes Totah that she identifies as a transgender woman: “Acting is always my passion. I am grateful for the roles that I’ve gotten in shows like the Champions, and I know that I am lucky and have to do what I like. But I also feel that I am in a cubicle late stop: ‘J. J. Totah, homojongen’… People assumed that I was gay. People continued to assume that my identity was.”

Totah, who became known by the children’s television series Jessie, adds: “I was asked how it feels to be a young gay man. I was even in that way, introduced before I made an award of a LGBTQ+ rights organization… The hiding of my true self is not healthy. I know now more than ever that I finally am ready for this step to be myself. I’m ready to be free.”
