Elise Mertens forces two-time Wimbledon winner to the limit, but folds after almost three hours

Elise Mertens (WTA-14) is there on Friday, just failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the prestigious WTA tournament in Cincinatti. Our compatriot put Petra Kvitova (WTA-6) almost three-hour long fire to the shins, but folded yet final after three hotly contested sets: 7-5, 5-7 and 6-3.

Elise Mertens had in the eighth-finals yet settled with the American Sloane Stephens (WTA 3), and drew accordingly with a lot of confidence to her duel with Petra Kvitova, the number six in the world rankings and two-time winner of Wimbledon.

But the Czech started as a mad man to the party and sailed in no time at all to 5-0. Eternal fighter Mertens gave, however, were not immediately won over, and stronger is actually back to 5-5. To be on the own storage folds to 6-5. Had Kvitova three setballen need to finish it.
