The German Team Sunweb draws with the Dutch klassementsman Wilco Kelderman and the German sprinter Phil Bauhaus as leaders to the 73rd Vuelta. Edward Theuns and Louis Vervaeke are not there in the eight piece outfit selection, which further consists of the Germans Simon Geschke and Johannes Fröhlinger, the Australians Jai Hindley Michael Storer and the Dutchmen Mike Teunissen and Martijn Tusveld.
Wilco Kelderman was last year, fourth in the Vuelta at 3:15 of winner Froome. This season, he wanted to at the side of fellow countryman Tom Dumoulin shine in the Tour but due to a broken collarbone, had the Dutchman was forced to give up.
“We are pleased that Wilco start. That is a small miracle after the difficult period in which he recovered from a complicated injury,” says Sunwebcoach Aike Visbeek. “He has worked hard on his comeback but is waiting to see what level he achieves in a competition of three weeks. We see it from day to day with an eye on the standings. At the start of the third week, we will see where he stands.”
Phil Bauhaus should Sunweb success delivered in the sprints. The 24-year-old German makes his debut in the Vuelta, but won this year for a ride in the Lap of Abu Dhabi. Last year triumphed in a stage of the Dauphiné.
The 73rd stage of the Vuelta begins on August 25 with a short individual time trial in Malaga and ends on 16 september in Madrid.
