The members of the General Assembly of the International tennis federation (ITF) Thursday the new format for the Davis Cup approved. 71,4 percent of the members voted for, making the required two-thirds majority was reached.
The traditional format of Davis Cup, three days of tennis with four enkelwedstrijden and one double during four long weekends throughout the year, is as history. The ITF will the tournament from 2019 to turn into an annual tournament of seven days, played by sixteen to eighteen countries, that in one single place continues in november, at the end of the season.
Sporty, the duels shortened to three mutual duels, two enkelpartijen and one double. The system of three winning sets will also be abandoned and replaced by a system of two winning sets. Because the tournament in one place continue, the home advantage – that are currently still very important in the Davis Cup – completely wiped out.
From a financial point of view, holds the ITF is a particularly lucrative deal with the investment group Kosmos. The partnership is estimated at 2.5 billion euros. Cosmos promises the players an annual prize pool of about 17 million euro. For the federations is even more money freed up.
The German federation suggested earlier questioning that cooperation. “We are concerned about the opaque nature of the financial promises”, she said. “We also want our supporters do not deny that they are the best players in the world on the work.”
Some of the top players, such as Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, showed pro the initiative. Other big names inside the tennis world, such as Lleyton Hewitt, Yannick Noah, and our compatriot Steve Darcis a bit weak, then again severely hampered. Roger Federer blew hot and cold. He had, however, already know to find “that the Davis Cup had to do something”.
