The Bie was one of the early escapees the peloton could outwit. “I had it last week and already planned to be here today to attack,” he explains on the site of his team Veranda’s Willems-Crelan. “The final was quite technical and thus there was a possibility to keep ahead of a long flight.”
“Van der Hoorn and Mohoric were the ‘mopeds’ today. Unfortunately, it is not able to benefit from their work. I have deliberately not involved with the intermediary sprints and checkpoints. I was focused on the dagzege. Sometimes you have to play poker. I felt good for the sprint.”
In the mode of the 26-year-old De Bie less than a second behind the Slovenian leader Matej Mohoric.
