Taco van der Hoorn, the third stage in the BinckBank Tour won. In the streets of Antwerp was the man of Roompot his three companions to outwit. Maxime Vantomme (WB-Aqua Protect-Veranclassic) ran behind the Dutchman to second place, Sean De Bie (Veranda’s Willems-Crelan) was third. They were part of a breakaway group of five that early in the ride off went. The peloton came in spite of working extremely hard of the sprintersploegen too late. Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Merida) was fourth and is the new leader.
There were today 174 kilometres on the programme, from Aalter to Antwerp. After a fast start, five riders got away: Sean De Bie (Veranda’s Willems-Crelan), Mat Mohoric (Bahrain Merida), Maxime Vantomme (WB-Aqua Protect-Veranclassic), Jesper Asselman and Taco van der Hoorn (both Roompot). They drove quickly, a minute ahead at each other, the flight of the day had left. With Mohoric were the two Belgians and two Dutchmen a tough customer. The Slovenian won last season, a stage in the Vuelta, welcomed this year in the Giro and crowned itself the Slovenian national road champion.
The five should be a maximum gap of 3’40”, in the peloton, it was mainly BMC and LottoNL-Jumbo that the pace determined. Despite the solid kopwerk of those two teams were the five front good position, the edge fell just in dribs and drabs, at 50 kilometers from the finish they had still three minutes. It was however hard in the peloton, several riders at the rear were in trouble.
But despite the solid pace in the peloton remained behind for more than two minutes. Meanwhile, we came within 20 km of the finish, the five at the front turned around and held it. Especially Mohoric made an impression with his kopbeurten. Only 12 kilometres from the finish was the difference in the two minutes it promised a razendspannend slot to be. In the peloton, meanwhile, was also Quick Step Floors, a hand coming to reach out, but a lot of effect had not.
With the minute it became increasingly clear that – if they would not stop – the five at the front of the one below the other went out. The difference even went back over two minutes, in the peloton there was a little line in the chase. The pursuers came barely a poet.
5 km from the more decided Mohoric that he did not want to wait for the sprint, and the Slovenian fell to. Asselman had for the Roompot-duo the chestnuts out of the fire, but did not succeed in closing the gap. That was a strong The Bie and the Belgian has offset also attempt two and three of Mohoric. Asselman, we were already lost through the gears.
At the start of the last kilometre accelerated Van der Hoorn. Mohoric seemed to fill the void, but kept his legs still. The Bie and Vantomme names are not over and so was Van der Hoorn the victory in the laps. For the Dutchman, it is the most beautiful victory of his career so far. Vantomme dashed off to the second place, The Bie was third. Mohoric was fourth, but saw his aanvalslust rewarded with the leader’s jersey, which he takes over from Stefan Küng.
