Paralympiër Genyn ready for the european CHAMPIONSHIPS in athletics in spite of small setbacks

For paralympiër Peter Genyn is the race for Tokyo 2020 has now really started. He is next week at the start of the 100 and 200 metres at the european CHAMPIONSHIPS, Para-athletics in Berlin, one of the most important races on the way to the Paralympic Games in Tokyo about two years. Nevertheless, it was the past weeks not without stress: at the end of July lap Genyns hip out of the bowl, so he is forced to remain still under the knife. However, the rolstoelatleet next week again for gold.

“In contrast to a runner, I have my hip which is not necessary in the wheelchair,” says Genyn. “But it was terribly difficult, because it brought spasm and headache. Fortunately, I have the past two weeks of hard training. I want to full for gold, but realize that my ambitions may have to adjust. If you do not succeed, then I know, in any case in which it is located, because I have my best season ever turned.”

It was indeed a great year for Genyn. The paralympic champion and world record holder klokte at the Belgian Championship in July on 20”76 in the 100 metres. At the Grand Prix in Switzerland, he went even as first rolstoelatleet under the historical limit of 20 seconds with 19”89, a new world record. He dominated there, his greatest opponents, such as the Finnish Toni Piispanen, the Algerian Mohamed Berrahal and the Mexican Edgar Cesareo Sanchez Navarro.

After the european CHAMPIONSHIPS in Berlin, it might be still in Japan and in October leaves Genyn on stage for the next season to prepare, with a focus on the GP in Dubai and the world CHAMPIONSHIPS in October 2019. Then the last straight line towards the Tokyo 2020 really used.

For Genyn hard to fight. Also on the financial level. “I have the luck that I have with supermarket chain Lidl and isolatiebedrijf IKO two main sponsors, have to the Paralympic Games. Because the sport remains expensive. The Belgian Paralympic Committee and Parantee-Psylos pay for me the participation in the championships and the Games, and one international competition per year. The costs for courses and materials are for your own account. A chair costs soon 7,000 euros, my wedstrijdbanden two races, you’ve got carbon wheels, gloves of which I have a couple per week wears out. Without sponsorship, that would not succeed.”
