The Belgian consulate in Barcelona is plastered with slogans against the Catalan independence and the presence of the former Catalonian minister-president Carles Puigdemont in Belgium. The consulate remains open, and the graffiti is removed.
On the walls and the floor on the outside of the building read ‘Puigdemont to jail’, ‘Belgium: a haven for criminals’ and ‘Belgium complicit in separatism’. Foreign Affairs confirms the incident, but will not go into that.
The graffiti is signed with ‘La Falange’, the name of an extreme right-wing party that is extremely opposed to Catalan independence known. According to the newspaper La Vanguardia , the last few weeks several organizations that strive to Catalan independence have become the victim of extreme right-wing vandals. It is according to the newspaper the first time that the Belgian consulate in the Catalan capital is required .
The Spanish court wants the former Catalonian minister-president Carles Puigdemont sue for the organising of a referendum on the independence of Catalonia in October 2017. Puigdemont fled to Belgium, where he currently still resides.
