Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) has on Thursday the third stage in the 40th Round of Burgos (cat. 2.BC) won. The 24-year-old Colombian beat on the Picon Blanco in a sprint with two of his fellow countryman, Ivan Sosa. The Spaniard David de la Cruz was at 32 seconds, third.
Lopez is also the new leader. In the stand he has two seconds ahead of Sosa. the Eritreeër Merhawi Kudus is on 27 seconds third.
The 149-kilometre-long was from Sedano to Espinosa de los Monteros spent quite a bit climbing: the Alto de la Mota, the Alto Escaleron, the Alto Ailanes, the Alto Retuerta and as a bouncer, the Picon Blanco, 7,9 km long, with an average gradient of 9,46 percent, with pieces of up to 18 percent.
Five riders became the contest by going along with an early flight. Delio Fernandez, Lluis Mas, Txomin Juaristi, Sindre Lunke and Pablo Torres were not more than 2:30 from the peloton, where Sky and Astana the command is carried out.
At the foot of the final climb had the last two escapees, Torres and Mas, still 55 seconds bonus and that would not suffice. Mas was 6 km as last nabbed by what remained of the peloton. Ruben Fernandez opened the debates on the final climb, followed by Igor Anton, but Lopez took command over. Six riders went in the counter attack: Rein Taaramae and David de La Cruz, Tao Geoghegan, Igor Anton, Merhawi Kudus and Ivan Ramiro Sosa. Only that last one could still make the jump to the Lopez and showed him even a moment behind. Lopez stronger back to the front and showed himself in the sprint the fastest.
The Colombian recorded as his third victory of the season, after a stage win in the Tour of Oman (2.BC) and the Tour of the Alps (2.BC). In the Giro he was third. It is already his third victory in his career in the Tour of Burgos, after victories in 2015 and 2017.
