ATHENS – Nearly eight thousand migrants have been since the beginning of this year voluntarily returned from Greece to their homeland. That made the Greek police Tuesday known in Athens.
“These are people who realize that they do not have any chance to seek asylum in the EU and voluntarily and safely want to return,” said a Greek police ofcers. In just the month of July they returned, 841 people back to their homeland, especially to Albania, Iraq and Pakistan.
The repatriations will take place in close cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The IOM offers migrants a return under the protection of security authorities. Before the refugees in the aircraft steps, they will get an amount of 500 up to 1500 euro to start off their life in their home country.
