The American Serena Williams (WTA 26) has at the last moment opted out of the WTA tournament in Montreal. The 36-year-old American withdrew because of “personal reasons”, reports the organization on Twitter.
“We are very disappointed that Serena will not come, the fans looked forward to her here to see,” said tournament director Eugène Lapierre. “But our event remains of a high level. The entire top ten of the world does.”
Williams reached last month, the finals of Wimbledon, where she lost to German Angelique Kerber (ATP 4). The 23-fold grandslamkampioene cashed last week in San José, a historically heavy defeat against the British Johanna Konta (WTA 48). It was 6-1 and 6-0. Serena Williams would be in Montreal in the first round against the French Alize Cornet (WTA 34), but that is now the German Tatjana Maria (WTA 82).
