KINSHASA – Congolese opposition leader Jean-Pierre Bemba has himself formally a candidate for the presidential election in his country. He makes a surprising comeback after ten years to have been stuck in Scheveningen.
Bemba is-according to his opponents not eligible for participation due to a conviction due to the influence of the witnesses.
The International criminal Court (ICC) had the former warlord Bemba convicted of war crimes, but an appeal followed earlier this year, surprising acquittal. The opposition leader returned Wednesday to return to his homeland. There were tens of thousands of supporters on to the streets to welcome him. “Kabila, know that Bemba is back”, they chanted.
Although Bemba is now as a presidential candidate has to be notified to the electoral commission, it is still unclear whether he actually is allowed to participate in the elections. He comes according to his opponents not eligible for participation due to a conviction due to the influence of the witnesses. Which is not yet withdrawn by the ICC.
