Polar bear injures German man on Spitsbergen

BERLIN – Svalbard is a man attacked by a polar bear. The German was a member of the crew of the cruise ship MS Bremen. He was wounded in the head and is by helicopter to Longyearbyen, the main city of the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.

The man went with other crew members to land on one of the islands when the polar bear suddenly appeared to him and attacked. His colleagues shot on it: “in self-defense” the animal is dead, says a spokesman for the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. According to him, no tourists in danger come.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offers several boat trips to the Arctic. Tourists can this way of the “arctic purity,” reads the advertisement of the shipping company. “Where the polar bears are the wilderness reign.”
