The stop-motion animated film ‘This Magnificent Cake !’ of the directing duo Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels has Sunday night won the Audience price at the short film Festival in portugal’s Vila do Conde (14-22 July). It reports the Flemish Audiovisual Fund.
“This Magnificent Cake!” is a medium historic animated film in four chapters, tells the story of five characters in the colonial Africa at the end of the 19th century: a restless king, a Pygmy in a luxury hotel, an unsuccessful businessman on an expedition, a stray carrier and a young deserter.
For the recordings brought De Swaef and Roels eight months in the animation of Beast Animation. For the voice cast they did appeal to include Jan Decleir, Wim Willaert, Goua Grovogui, Gaston Motambe, Sébastien Dewaele and Angelo Tijssens.
The production was in Cannes world premiere as part of the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, and collected, meanwhile, awards at the festivals of d.a. Annecy and Zagreb. The directing duo broke on to the international scene with ‘Oh Willy…’, an animated short from 2011 that more than 80 prizes binnenhaalde, including the Cartoon d’or for best European short animated film.
