‘A Star is Born’, the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper, at the 75th Venice film festival world premiere. It reports the trade magazine Hollywood Reporter. Cooper, four times nominated for an Oscar, also wrote the screenplay, produced the movie and plays the lead role of Jackson, Maine, a seasoned musician who falls in love with the very successful artist and a singer, Ally. The latter role is played by the very successful singer Lady Gaga. The soundtrack of the film contains songs from Cooper and Gaga.
The print is in Venice out of competition films. That means: no possibility to prices. There is, however, assumed that the next ‘Star is Born’ is a firm contender at the Oscars will be, especially in the musical categories. Gaga already has one Oscar on her mantelpiece, thanks to the song “Til it happens to you’ from ‘The Hunting ground’. Cooper, known from the ‘Hangover’movies, has all three Oscarnominaties for his acting in his name. His roles in ‘American Sniper, ‘American Hustle’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ by the jury, however, not silver plated.
The celebrated ‘Star is Born’ from the Hollywoodgeschiedenis follows the traditional pattern: the beschermelinge rises towards the top, the patron is tormented by his own demons, old age and drink. In the previous three films was the leading duo successively played by Janet Gaynor and Fredric March (137), Judy Garland and James Mason (the best known version, from 1954) and by Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Streisand (1976). Those films won, respectively, not (despite six nominations) and one Oscar.
