MADRID – The Spanish conservative Partido Popular (PP) has Pablo Casado chosen as the new leader. He follows ex-prime minister Mariano Rajoy on who had to leave as first minister and then also the leadership of the party was forced to concede.
During the congress of the PP defeated the 37-year-old Casado Saturday, in a vote among the approximately 3200 members of parliament and prominent members Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, the former deputy prime minister.
Rajoy came early last month after the Spanish parliament passed a motion of censure against him had been adopted. The occasion was the sentencing to long prison terms of some of the directors of the PP for corruption. Rajoy was followed immediately by the leader of the socialist PSOE, the economist Pedro Sánchez.
