The Eritrean president Isaias Afwerki is Saturday, landed in Ethiopia for a historic three-day visit. The first visit of the Eritrean president in 22 years, should the normalisation of relations between the former enemies in the Horn of Africa seal.
The 72-year-old Afwerki was at the airport of the capital city Addis Ababa received by the Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed. The reformist prime minister was last week himself travelled to Eritrea, where the two countries have a historic agreement locks and the end of hostilities announced. They now want to also trade relations and diplomatic relations to repair.
Eritrea and Ethiopia, since 1998 engaged in a violent border dispute that tens of thousands of people with their lives had to die. In 2000, a peace agreement is reached, but that was never fully implemented and both countries remained at odds and the support of rival parties in regional conflicts, as in Somalia.
