Dour state since 1989, synonymous with the Plaine de la Machine à Feu. An iconic festival, built on the ancient past. That offered a challenging course: the terrain lying is erratic in all directions, there were hills to be climbed, bottlenecks had to be defied, and the pull of the main stage The Last Arena to the ontdekkingstent Le Labo was so far that you almost sjerpa would enable.

But his thirtieth birthday celebrates the festival on a different site: the whole zwik moved to the other side of the great road. Douristen dancing now in the scarce shade of the wind farm Dour-of quiévrain-Hensies – the largest in its kind in Belgium.

“It was not our own decision,” says spokesman David Delannoy. ‘At the end of last year, we learned that parts of the Dour-site would be sold to Zalando, that there is a distribution center wikde, probably. In addition, there were major roadworks on the lift in the region. Therefore, we opted for the flight ahead with a completely new site, a few kilometres away.’

It feels different

In essence, there are no fundamental changes: the terrain-there are still as many tents, and aims at the same audience. But it still feels different. The Last Arena is no longer the first stop for those of the camping: the main stage will get a spot on the festivalrand. The increasingly popular Red Bull Elektropedia Balzaal on the other hand, where djs until the early hours with the beats and drops straw, is no longer tucked away behind a row of trees and a invariably opgestopte access road: that feels like a full second stage.

But most of all the distances become smaller. ‘At the previous site we had to take into account trees, hills and a number of houses in the neighbourhood, ” says Delannoy. ‘Here we had free reign on an open plain. This meant that we were all much closer to each other.’

Own little corner

“We have still chosen to each stage their own corner. So we maintain a center square where the whole world sees passing, with all the subcultures together. But that intersection is no longer on the field of The Last Arena.”

That is the atmosphere of that stage: it feels smaller, but the attendees are interested in the concert. And it must be said, with the imposing wind turbines on the background also has this terrain of potential as icon. Though there is more work on the clothing, also know Delannoy. “Such plain, of course, you have much more inkleden. Therefore, we have some venues lined with containers, and by the lack of trees on the site, we had more chillzones create with wooden structures and tents.’
