The Belgians continue to leave their mark on the Tour of Austria (2.1). Tuesday was Wout van Aert (Verandas Willems-Crelan) after a sprint uphill second in the fourth stage. Only the Italian Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida) was faster. Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy) continues to lead of the general classification.

The fourth stage between Kitzbühel and Prägraten was not the heaviest of all, but still lay on the road, a climb of first category, and the finish line drawn at a slope of second category. The Brit Stephen Cummings, for the first time since a long time not in the Tour, was the last survivor of an early flight and tried on his faithful way the peloton by surprise. But after materiaalpech he was overtaken on the final climb.

In the slotkilometers there were still attack attempts of, inter alia, Alexey Lutsenko, Mark Padun and Antonio Nibali, but was ultimately a sprint from a depleted group for the dagzege. Therein recorded Vincenzo Nibali his second stage win in this Tour of Austria, also the third for his team Bahrain-Merida. Van Aert ended up on the back wheel of Visconti, on the second place. The Italian Michael Bresciani was third.

Ben Hermans finished in the first group, and remains so in the leader’s jersey. Wednesday will wait for him an important assignment: the fifth stage of only 92 km to finish at 2.403 metres in height on the Grossglockner.
